LMS

LMS is short for Learning Management System and is an educational platform where teachers and course participants can communicate. It works as a virtual classroom where you can also share documents, hand in assignments, chat and discuss with other participants. The educational platform also facilitates course administration, for instance by making it easier for teachers to share a course, offering automatically corrected tests and by being able to register marks and assessments directly in the platform.   
 

Micro courses
 
Micro courses are short training courses carried out through e-learning. It’s possible to complete a micro course in only a few minutes, which is a great advantage when there is not enough time to sign up for a regular course. Micro courses work as a summary of the most important parts of a subject and provide a sample of what you can learn if taking a longer course in the same subject. They can consist of audio, text, image and video, but all micro courses offer a quick and easy way of obtaining new information. 
 

Gap Test
 
In e-learning, a gap test can be used to measure the difference between a student’s actual knowledge and his/her potential or desired knowledge level. Using a gap test makes it is easier to identify the weaknesses of an education in order to improve it and make sure that the course participants are actually learning what they should.
 

Social Learning
 
Social learning is also called crowd learning and means that course participants learn from one another by sharing their knowledge and giving each other feedback. By doing so, you can make use of other participants’ experiences, ideas and approaches, thereby promoting joint learning. 
 

Pedagogy
 
The word “pedagogy” is commonly understood as the theory of education. Learning can take place in many different ways, for instance by reading, writing, listening or discussing. In e-learning the pedagogy must be adapted to the fact that all teaching takes place online and that the teacher and participants do not have any face to face meetings. 
 

Methodology

Methodology is the practice of analysing different learning methods. By doing so, one can identify the most suitable method for conveying information and define for what reason the chosen method should be used. The teaching methods are somewhat limited in e-learning, since the instructor and participants do not meet face to face. On the other hand, there are many aids available, for instance web cameras, video recording devices and live chats with the instructor or other participants.
 

Didactics
 
Didactics is a discipline that deals with everything that affects teaching and what methods and strategies should be used in teaching. The focus is on four questions regarding how learning should be organised: What should be taught, why it should be taught, how it should be taught and to whom it should be taught. 
 

Interactive Tools


When offering courses or training online various tools are needed to facilitate teaching. Interactive tools are tools that allow you to include different events that create interactivity in your learning, for instance marking things on your screen in order to proceed with the course. These programmes can often export standard formats, such as SCORM, that can then be imported straight into your LMS.

Distance learning

In distance training and learning, the teacher and students usually do not meet during the course of the education. In order to communicate they instead use learning platforms, which with the help of image, sound and video together make up the training material. Distance learning can also be organised via e-mail or in customised discussion forums where participants can communicate with the teacher and each other.
 

Blended learning

This is a mix of different types of learning, usually learning taking place in different learning environments. Distance learning is usually combined with face-to-face meetings, which makes it possible to utilise the benefits of both methods. 

Flipped classroom
 
This is an example of blended learning, where teaching is mostly carried out by using digital tools. The concept refers to the fact that the classroom is used for analyses, discussions, laboratory demonstrations or elaborations, rather than traditional teaching. This is achieved by using digital tools, such as videos, blogs or podcasts, which the participants watch or study in advance in order to digest the training material and prepare for the lessons. 

Gamification

In e-learning it’s possible to use the world of computer games to offer new and innovative teaching methods. Course participants may for example collect points, participate in contests or adopt different roles. Gamification is a highly efficient way of learning and becomes increasingly popular thanks to new technology, such as apps, computer programmes and the possibility of constant connection to the internet. ​

SCORM

SCORM is an abbreviation of Sharable Content Object Reference Model and is a way of sharing web-based course material with others. A SCORM compatible educational platform can accept other SCORM compatible content, thereby making it available to the users of the platform.
